This family owned and operated business has been a regional leader in concrete construction for over 40 years. Woody Houck began this business with a partner in 1969, eventually buying him out in 1971. Melva, his wife, handled the financial and office duties from their home. In 1972, B&H Concrete were one of the first in the area to utilize an Easi-Pour (photo above). Their son started working for them in 1974 and, at the age of 14, had a shovel put in his hand. Woody believed that Tim should learn the business from the ground up, which he did. In the early 1990s, Tim saw an opportunity in the commercial and residential concrete and masonry markets. The diversification and ensuing rapid growth propelled B&H into the Top 100 Concrete Contractors in the country. In 1998, Tim took over as President. The oldest daughter, Val, began working with Melva in the office in 1979 after leaving the education field. The youngest of their children, Laurie, joined them full time after earning her degree in 1987. It is truly a family business that is run using the same strong, committed family values to which we adhere. That may be one reason why 30% of our employees have remained with us over 20 years. Here’s what some had to say:
“As B & H approaches its 40th anniversary it presents a good opportunity for me to reflect on my 35-plus years with the company. I have been here long enough to see the company go from a small, one crew, Mom and Pop, (Melva and Woody) company to a much larger seven plus crew company under the direction of the next generation of Houck’s (Tim, Val and Laurie).
I guess the thing that has sustained me the most through all of my years is the strong “family value” atmosphere that the Houck family has incorporated, not only in their own family, but in their company family as well. A strong family is an organization that supports and sustains all of its members and gives everyone a feeling of security and belonging. These are the characteristics that Woody and Melva started the company with 40 years ago and they are just as important today.
B & H is also a business that operates with solid core values such as honesty, integrity, quality and a strong sense of community welfare. It has been rewarding for me to work in this type of environment and I am pleased and proud to consider myself a member of the B & H family.”

“B&H has the total package; smart people, great leadership, good benefits and good camaraderie among workers. Honest work for honest pay. I have been treated very well on the job and in my personal life. B&H has been a real support group for me. Just good people.
For these reasons and more is why I’ve been here for twenty years. By God’s will, I’ll be here until I can’t work any longer.”

In 1989, we set a local record that still stands today by pouring over 7500 lf of curb & gutter in one day. Instead of “gearing up” for days prior to this big pour, we placed approximately 1500 lf each day before and after the record breaking 1 ½ mile pour. We continually look for new technology in our field and for ways to improve our production and quality of work. We maintain state-certification and have completed projects from Northern Virginia to the Raleigh/Durham North Carolina area. B & H Concrete has built a solid reputation for excellence in site concrete as well as residential, commercial and masonry projects.
